Description

Lantern slide of Lynche's memorial window, Co. Galway. Originally labeled '57 G' with title 'Galway'. This memorial is located in Market St., at the rear of St. Nicholas's Church. Known as the "Lynch Stone" it bears the following inscription: "This memorial of the stern and unbending justice of the chief magistrate of this city, James Lynch Fitzstephen, elected mayor A.D. 1493, who condemned and executed his own guilty son, Walter, on this spot, has been restored to its ancient site." Below this is a stone with a skull and cross-bones, which reads:"1524 Remember Deathe Vaniti of Vaniti and al is but Vaniti." This relates to a well known legend that the mayor had his son hanged from this window after he confessed to killing a man.
