Beschreibung
Lantern slide of Claregalway Castle and the Nine Arches, Co. Galway. Originally labeled '50 G' with title Claregalway Cas.' Claregalway Castle is a very well conserved rectangular five story tower. It has all the regular defensive features of a tower house including, a portcullis, a murder hole, parapet and machicolations. In the 1469 Annals of the Four Masters mentions Claregalway as mansion residence of McWilliam Uachtar de Burgo. Pictured in front of the castle are parts of the Nine Arches. This was a stone bridge constructed in the early 18th century. After a local landlord from nearby Lackagh, changed the course of the riverÑdiverting it away from under the Nine Arches to a deeper channel, the bridge fell in to disrepair. Both the bridge and castle pictured have under gone major reconstruction since photographed.
