Description

Lantern slide of Claregalway Castle, Co. Galway. Originally labeled '51 G' with title 'Claregalway Cas.' Claregalway Castle is a very well conserved rectangular five story tower. It has all the regular defensive features of a tower house including, a portcullis, a murder hole, parapet and machicolations. In the 1469 Annals of the Four Masters mentions Claregalway as mansion residence of McWilliam Uachtar de Burgo. The derelict view of the castle pictured in the slide highlights the extent of the conservation work done in recent times.
