Description

Lantern slide depicting a round tower in Monasterboice, Co. Louth. Originally titled 'Monasterboice Co. Louth' and labelled 'L5 24'. The monument is found in an old monastic settlement in Monasterboice. The slide shows the round tower found in the Monasterboice monestary. The ruins of the tower are missing the top of the monument and was badly damaged in a fire in 1097. In the fire, the interior of the tower and its contents were damaged or destroyed, including a library. The external of the tower however, remains standing. When first built the tower would have been used both as a bell tower and as a refuge for the monks from Viking invasion.
