Subject
Round Tower
Description
Lantern slide depicting the base of the round tower in Monasterboice, Co. Louth. Originally without title, but with 'Monasterboice' written across the back in pencil and labelled 'L5 25'.The monument is found in an old monastic settlement in Monasterboice. In addition to the base of the round tower, the slide shows four figures standing or lying near the doorway to the monument. Two women can be seen either side of the image, with one man lying on the grass second to the left, and a second man can be seen standing just beside him. The doorway is open with a ladder leading into the monument. Since the time this image was taken, formal stairs have been added to the monument to improve access. The tower depicted in the image is the round tower in Monasterboice monestary, Co. Louth. The tower would have originally been used by monks as a bell tower and as a refuge from Viking invasion. The interior of the tower and its contents were damaged or destroyed in a fire in 1097, but the interior is still accessible.
