Description
Lantern slide of the Great Dublin Civic Sword, Co. Dublin. Originally catalogued with label 'D3 VII 67'. Depicts Dublin's Great Civic Sword which was originally made for Henry Bolingbroke during the 1390s and was used by him before becoming Henry IV of England in 1399. It is attributed to the London goldsmith Herman van Cleve and was presented to the city of Dublin around the year 1410. The scabbard, by the Dublin silversmith William Drayton, was made during the 1960s but incorporates earlier decorative mounts, including some from the original scabbard. The Great Sword has been in ceremonial use for nearly 600 years and is featured during the conferring of the Honorary Freedom of Dublin. (dublincity.ie)
