Description

Lantern slide of the Long Room, Trinity College Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 II 8' and without a title. The Old Library was constructed in the 18th century and now houses 200,000 of the library's oldest books. Measuring 65 meters in length, the room contains a collection of marble busts commissioned by the sculptor Peter Scheemakers. The upper gallery bookcases are visible in the slide. These were built in the 1860 when the roof was raised to allow room for the barrel-vaulted ceiling. Corinthian style pilasters mark each bay of shelves. A richly decorated entablature and balustrade are topped by these pilasters.
