Description
Lantern slide of Bullock Harbour & Castle, Dalkey, Co. Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 III 38' with the title 'Bullock Harbour & Castle.' The monks in St. Mary's Abbey Dublin, are responsible for the development of Bullock Harbour. Originally the harbour was used to send fish to Dublin, and in order to protect this transaction a castle was built. Although it was used for defensive purposes, the castle also acted as an Inn for those who passed through the port. This 12th century castle is built of granite. The castle is oblong in shape and has a tower at each end. There is a large barrel-vaulted room inside the main door and a spiral staircase that leads to an array of rooms.
