Description

Commons Hill
Lantern slide of Forthill Park, Enniskillen. Originally labeled '11 F' with title 'Pleasure Grounds. Enniskillen.' The park has a rich historical background. It first got the name "Commons Hill" after the Plantation. Here was where the locals could graze their cattle. By 1836 it was closed off, planted with trees and was then considered a pleasure ground. In the 1880's the park had fallen into disrepair. It was then decided by Thomas Plunkett, chairman of the town commissioners, that the park would be landscaped and eventually reopen to the public. It was in August 1851 when his goal was achieved. Pictured in the slide is a man standing next to one of the parks attractions, a pond.
