Description
Lantern slide of a man in stocks, Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 59' and without a title. The man in the photo is sitting on a stone seat with his legs placed in stocks. Stocks were a form of physical punisment and restaint popular in medieval and Renaissance society. These were made from large, hinged wooden boards. A series of holes are used to restrain the limbs of the prisoner. These wooden stocks stood in Christchurch yard and were eventually moved to the crypt. The stocks were used for offenders who were presented before the Court of the Dean's Liberty.
