Description

Lantern slide depicting a window at Seir Kieran monastic site, Co. Offaly. Originally titled 'Seir Kieran (Clareen) E. Window' and labelled 'K4 50'. The image depicts a window on the East side of the monestary founded by St. Ciaran in the 5th Century. During the 9th and 10th Century there were numerous Viking raids on the monastery. The impressive enclosing ramparts were erected for protection around this time, reputedly in the 940s. In 952 the monastery was raid by the Munster men.
