Description
Lantern slide depicting a cross in Clonmacnoise, Co. Offaly. Originally labelled titled 'Cross. Clonmacnoise T. MASON, 5 DAME STREET, DUBLIN' and labelled 'K4 3'. The monument depicted in the image is the known as the Cross of the Scriptures, or King Flann's Cross. The original cross was moved from its position in 1991 and replaced by a replica in order to protect the carvings on the monumnet. Based in inscriptions on the cross, the monument was carved and erected by Abbot Colman in honor of King Flann, who died in 914 CE. The cross is inscribed with many biblical scenes. In addition to the cross, two women can be seen kneeling at the foot of the monument.
