Description

Lantern slide depicting a church in Iniskeen, Co. Monaghan. Originally titled 'Inniskeen R.T. & Church. Co. Monaghan' and labelled 'M3 5'. The monumnets depicted in the image are a church and round tower, left from a monastery which was founded c. 6th century by Saint Daigh. The area, including the round tower was burned in 789, plundered by the Vikings in 948, and burned a second time in 1166. The church ceased to be a place of worship in 1970. The tower beside the church is now the Patrick Kavanagh Centre. The renowned poet and his wife are buried in the adjoining graveyard.
