Description
Lantern slide depicting Cloontykilla castle in Co. Roscommon. Originally titled 'Co. Roscommon' and labelled 'R 28'. The slide depicts Cloontykilla Castle with two men posing at the entrance to the monument. The monument is located in Lough Kee National Forest Park. It is also known as Rockingham Castle, after the original name of the estate it was built on. It dates back to the early 19th century which can be deduced by the presence of the number 1839 on the stone archway. Due to the size of the monument it is thought that it was used as a retreat for hunting rather than permanant residence. In the image the castle is seen as being in relatively good condition, but has since become deralict. The gates that can be seen in the image are in the Tudor Style.
