Beschrijving

Lantern slide depicting Ballintober Castle, Co. Roscommon. Originally titled 'Ballintober Castle, Co. Roscommon' with another titled scratched out, saying 'Roscommon Castle. Co. Roscommon' and labelled 'R 9'. There is some debate over the origins and builder of the monument Ballintober Castle. It is widely beleived that the monument was built by the O'Connors of Connacht, with a story that Felim O'Connor order the construction of the monument In Ballintober, Mayo, and when he disocvered it had been built in Roscommon in error, he order a second, grander one to be built in Mayo. However, due to the particular layout of the interior, e.g the high number of residential rooms there are theories that the Castle is of Norman contruction. However, It is generally agreed that the monument was built in the 12th century. The monument is a keelpless castle and was attacked and burnt a number of times over the 1300's.
