Lantern slide depicting a lavabo in Mellifont Abbey, Collon, Co. Louth. Originally titled 'MELLIFONT LAVABO Ext. Bapistry, Mellifont. T. MASON, 5 DAME STREET, DUBLIN. 2390-_Pl' and labelled 'L5 45'. The image depicts the lavabo which would have been used for the monks to wash their hands before eating. The monument is currently known as Old Mellifont Abbey, and was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. The abbey was founded in 1142 by Saint Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh. The ruin is located near Collon, by the banks of the river Mattock, 6 miles North of Drogheda.
