Description

Lantern slide depicting aeriel plans of Mellifont Abbey in Collon, Co. Louth. Originally titled 'MELLIFONT ABB: Plan l+a' and labelled 'L5 44'. The image depicts an aeriel view of the ruins as they would have been when it was an active monestary. These ruins are known as Old Mellifont Abbey, and was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. The abbey was founded in 1142 by Saint Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh. The ruin is located near Collon, by the banks of the river Mattock, 6 miles North of Drogheda. A new abbey still active, is located nearby. The slide itself is highly detailed, identifying the various monuments and functional areas that the ruins have and would have contained.
