Опис

Lantern slide depicting a lavabo in Mellifont Abbey, Co. Louth. Originally titled 'Baptistav MELLFONT. Co. Louth' and labelled 'L5 15'. This slide shows a view of the lavabo through the ruins of the monestary that used to reside and be in active use in the area. These ruins are known as Old Mellifont Abbey, and was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. The abbey was founded in 1142 by Saint Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh. The ruin is located near Collon, by the banks of the river Mattock, 6 miles North of Drogheda. The lavabo would have been used by the monks to wash their hands before eating. A new abbey still active, is located nearby.
