Beskrivelse

Lantern slide depicting a lavabo in Mellifont Abbey, Co. Louth. Originally titled 'Mellifont abbey lavabo' and labelled 'L5 14'. In addition to the monument, there are three men sitting around the lavabo. It is currently known as Old Mellifont Abbey, and was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. The abbey was founded in 1142 by Saint Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh. The ruin is located near Collon, by the banks of the river Mattock, 6 miles North of Drogheda. The lavabo would have been used by the monks to wash their hands before eating.
