Description

Lantern slide of a map of the liberty of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Co. Dublin. Originally catalogued with label 'D3VIII 13' and 'T. Mason, 5, Dame Street Dublin.' Depicts an illustrated map of St. Patrick's Cathedral and it's surrounding area. There are several inscriptions on the map, including a reference table and a list of tenants names. The area of the cathedral is called a 'liberty', a term referring to areas of town land with their own jurisdiction. The Liberty of St. Patrick's Cathedral, and others such as the Liberty of St. Sepulchre, originate from medieval times, when ecclesiastical bodies were granted the rights of self-government within Dublin.
