Beschreibung

Lantern slide of a street view of Dublin City, Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 IV 59' and with the title 'Foster Place & William III.' This image was taken at College Green, in the centre of Dublin. In the background the former Irish House of Parliament can be seen. This was first designed by Edward Pearce and was constructed between 1729 and1739. Later editions include the east portico by James Gandon (1785-87), and the western entrance by Robert Parke (1787). Also present in the photo is the statue of William of Orange by Grinling Gibbons. It was located on College Green from 1701 until it was removed in 1928 after being damaged by an explosion. Throughout its history, it had alway been a target for vandals. In 1710 a group of students from Trinity College Dublin, covered the statue with mud and stole its sceptre. The street appears busy in the slide and there are a number of people and horses and caridges present.
