Descrição

Lantern slide of the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 IV 51' and with the title 'Rotunda.' Pictured in the slide is the Rotunda which was originally designed by James Ensor. This building was once part of the Rotunda Hospital, which was founded in 1748 by Bartholemew Mossse. It now houses the Ambassador Theatre. It was the first maternity hospital in Britain or Ireland and at one stage it was known as the largest in the world. The actual Rotunda (pictured) once held rooms for entertainment. Present in the slide is a frieze that runs around the top of the building's exterior. Created by James Gandon, this sculpted stone contains skulls of animals that are linked by draped fabric.
