Beschrijving

Lantern slide of Fosse, Howth, Co. Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 II 78' with the title 'Outer Fosses Baily Howth 1921.' A fosse is defined as a ditch or moat dug for fortification purposes. The fosses in the slide are part of a promontory fort located at the south-east corner of Howth. Its defenses are often referred to as the Baily Fort. The fort has two lines of defense; the other comprising of two lines of curving fosses with earthen banks; the inner line is located at a narrow point of the headland and contains a broad deep fosse. These forts date from the prehistoric period onwards. Currently the site is heavily overgrown.
