Beschrijving

Lantern slide of the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin. Originally labeled D3 II 38' with the title 'Rotunda-Hosp. Rotunda Hospital- Gardener.' The hospital was founded by Bartholomew Mosse and was moved from its original site in South Great Georges, to Gardiners St. in 1748. At the time of its construction, it was the first maternity hospital in Britain and Ireland. The hospital depended on charity, therefore there were many public function rooms where fundraising activities were held. A striking feature, as seen in the slide, is the campanile with its baroque copper dome. The hospital was designed by Richard Cassels with later editions to the Rotunda by Richard Johnston and James Dandon. Two children are see playing in front of the hospital
