Description

Lantern slide of the John McNeill Boyd monument, Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 II 26' with title St. Patrick's. John McNeill Boyd was captain of the 'Ajax' in 1861 when a violent storm hit the Irish coast. During the storm, Boyd and his crew attempted to rescue a nearby ship, but tragically lost their lives. After weeks his body washed ashore, and his remains were brought to St. Patrick's Cathedral. The monument pictured is located in the cathedral, and was sculpted by Sir Thomas Farrell. The inscription states the memorial was 'erected by the citizens of Dublin.'
