Description

Lantern slide of Columcille's chapel, Glencolumbkille, Co. Galway. This is station 5 of the Gleann Cholm Cille Turas, a religious procession that incorporates 15 diferent stations within 9 different townlands of Donegal. The slide has been originally labeled 38 with the title 'Glencolumbkille. Colum Cille's Bed.' Measuring 6x3.4 metres, it was probaly not built as a church but rather a shrine to the saint. The bed is made up of two horizontal slabs bounded on the South by three side stones. Pilgrims visiting the site would follow a ritual. This involved lying down on the bed, rotating firstly to the right side and then taking a handful of clay from underneath the bed. This is supposed to prevent fires in the home.
