Description

Lantern slide of an interior in Newman House, Co. Dublin. Originally catalogued with labels "No 85 Stephen's Green. Saloon. 1740" and "D3XI" and "58." Depicts a close-up view of the saloon ceiling in No. 85, Newman House. The stucco work depicts classical scenes of gods and allegorical figures, including Justice in the centre, with Juno and Iris to one side and Minerva to the other. There is additional rococo style borders and decorations, such as garlands, foliage, and cherubs. Newman House was the original location of the Catholic University of Ireland, and was named for Dr. John Henry Newman who was rector of the university. The University was founded in 1854 and was the precursor of University College Dublin.
