Description
Lantern slide of an interior in Newman House, Co. Dublin. Originally catalogued with labels "No 86 St Stephen's Green. 1765 (1765-8)" and "D3XI" and "56." Depicts a close-up view of the drawing room ceiling on the staircase landing in number 86. The plasterwork visible in the slide is rococo style, and shows swirling feathers, wings, flowers, urns, and garlands. A note on the bottom of the slide reads 'No. 86 St. Stephen's Green - Ceiling in Drawing Room'. Newman House (which consists of houses 85 and 86 Stephen's Green) was the original location of the Catholic University of Ireland, and was named for Dr. John Henry Newman who was rector of the university. The University was founded in 1854 and was the precursor of University College Dublin.
