Description

Lantern slide of Drimnagh Castle, Co. Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 III 17' and with the title 'Drimnagh Castle.' In 1215 the lands of Drimnagh were granted to Hugo de Bernivale, a Norman knight and it was on these grounds he built this castle. This 13th century structure was built from local limestone, and consists of a Great Hall, a medieval undercroft and a large battlement. Another notable feature is the garden surrounding the castle with its many plants grown for medicinal, culinary and decorative purposes. In the slide the front of castle is slightly overgrown but is still occupied. The castle was inhabited continuously between 1212 and 1953.
