Title

Galway City Walls, Co. Galway, Ireland

Subject

Town Defenses

Description

Lantern slide of Galway City's medieval walls, Co. Galway. Originally labeled '54 G' with title 'Ruins of Old City Wall - Eglinton Street Galway.' Walls such as pictured were essential to the city's defense against raids. Although the town received its first murage grant in 1270, it is possible that the walls may have been under construction from around 1250. Throughout the following centuries these defenses were continually renewed and improved.
