Description
Lantern slide of the sedilia located in Athenry Dominican Priory, Co. Galway. Originally catalogued as '33 G', with label 'Sedilia, Dom' Friary.' The priory was dedicated to SS Peter and Paul with both native Irish and colonizing Anglo-Normans co-operating in sponsoring the construction work started in 1241. Sedilia are stone seats usually found at the south side of an altar and were used during mass by the clergy. This canopied sedilia has three deep niches that are divided by columns.
