Description

Lantern slide of wall paintings found at Abbeyknockmoy, Co. Galway. Originally labeled '16 G' with label ' Painting - Knockmoy. From Du Noyer.' On the upper part of the slide is a scene from the tale of the of Three living and Three Dead Kings. The story is straightforward _ three kings out hunting, each carrying a hawk, encounter three grisly skeletons who admonish them for their vain clothing and fine airs and tell them to consider their own mortality. The inscription under the feet of the Dead Kings reads 'We have been as you are, you shall be as we are. O Under this, there is a scene taken from the life of St. Sebastian where he is killed during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. He is bound to a tree and has been shot from either side by a number of arrows discharged by the flanking archers.
