Description

Lantern slide of mason's marks found at Abeyknockmoy, Co. Galway. Originally catalogued as '19 G' with label 'Graffiti- Knockmoy.' The markings include; a cross and saltire combined in a rectangular frame; the letters DOtTII probably part of the word (T)Omine; and a cross and some initial or monogram dated 1541. This date is remarkable, as the monastery was suppressed in the following year. Perhaps the chancel was replastered in 1541 and the paintings executed on the new surface .
