Descrição
Lantern slide of a detail of Jove in The Elements and Seasons Ceiling in Mespil House, Mespil Road, Dublin. Originally Labelled 'D3 44', and with title 'Mespil House'. Although Mespil House was demolished in 1951, three of it's ceilings were kept due to the incredible stucco work which adorned them. Two ceilings, Medicine with the Arts and Sciences and Minerva introducing the Arts to Hibernia, now reside in Dublin Castle. The third ceiling, a detail of which can be seen in this slide, The Elements and Seasons ceiling, now resides in Aras an Uachtarain. This ceiling (c. 1750's) was formerly in the dining room and is an open ceiling. In the centre amongst the clouds is Jove, bearded and lightly draped, he is seated with a sunny halo carrying his thunderbolt in his right arm. His eagle sits extended underneath. The ceiling is attributed to Bartholomew Cramilion who worked on the chapel in the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin.
