Beskrivelse

Lantern slide of the interior of the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI), Dublin, Ireland. Originally labeled 'D3 6' and without a title. The NGI opened its doors in 1864 by the Earl of Carlisle. The new Gallery bulding was designed by Francis Fowke and its facade was to resemble that of the National History Musuem. The interior view of the Gallery shown by the slide, highlights the classical style in which it was built. Four large corinthian columns supports an architrave and frieze that is topped by a cornice running the paramerter of the room. One of the pieces featued in the slide is a sculpture of a boy picking a thorn out of his foot. Also known as Fedele or Spinarlo, the orginal is a Greco-Roman Hellenistic bronze sculpture fround in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Rome. The marble copy found in the NGI is by the 19th century Italian painter Giacomo Vanelli. It was presented to the Gallert by Mrs. Carmichael in 1863.
