Description
Lantern slide of effigial tomb, Co. Dublin. Originally catalogued as 'D3 V 22', with labels 'Mac Dowel Cosgrave M.D.' and 'Strongbow Ch Ch Cath: Dublin'. Depicts two recumbent stone effigial tombs, the larger (commonly considered to be the tomb of Strongbow) depicts a knight in full chain armour holding a heraldic shield. The burial site is certainly that of the earl, but the effigy itself appears to represent the Fitzosbert coat of arms suggesting that the original was perhaps damaged and replaced by the present effigy. The smaller half effigial tomb made of Purbeck marble (often believed to represent Strongbow's son) is in fact a female figure in attire dating to c1180.
