Opis
Lantern slide depicting Temple Dermot, Clonmanoise, Co. Offaly. Originally titled 'DOORWAY. CLONMACNOISE CATHEDRAL 797 Tp.' and labelled 'K4 36'. The image itself depicts the monument known as either the Cathedral or Temple Dermot/M Dermot/MacDermot. The monument is the largest on the monastic site and dates back to 909 AD. The image itself depicts the whispering arch, and is located on the West side of the church and was built in a transitional style. The doorway is known as the Whispering Arch as, supposedly, it was used for confessions. The one making the confession would stand on one side of the doorway, and the monk on the other. The confession would be whispered into the arch, and the monk on the other side would be able to hear from the other side.
