Description

Lantern slide depicting a drawing of a cross and tower in Clonmacnoise, Co. Offaly. Originally titled 'T. MASON, 5, Dame Street, DUBLIN' and labelled 'K4 1'. The monuments depicted are of O'Rourke's Tower and a High Cross called South Cross, found in Clonmacnoise Monastic site. The Round Tower is situated in the north-west corner of the Monastic Site. A wall was built in 1957 brining the tower inside the walls of the monastic complex. The tower is composed of well-shaped rectangular grey limestone blocks to the level of the bell-storey windows where obvious reconstruction work uses smaller and more irregular stone. The tower was built by Turlough O'Connor and O'Malone c.1124. It was damaged by lightning in 1135 and the present top with its eight openings is of later date. The South Cross has multiple scenes from the bible carved onto it, and was moved from its original position in 1991 amd replaced with replicas in order to protect these carvings. Indeed, in the image depcited it can be seen that the cross was in a delapidated state.
