Beschreibung
Lantern slide depicting Boyle Abbey in Co. Roscommon. Originally titled 'Boyle Abbey, Co. Rosc' and labelled 'R 18'. The monument is a Cistercian Monastery founded in the 12th century under the patronage of the MacDermotts. lands provided by the local ruling MacDermott family. In 1202 the Abbey was occupied by William de Burgh, a norman knight and founder of the Bourke dynasty in Ireland. In 1203 he plundered Connacht and took the title "Lord of Connacht". The slide itself depicts the three archways of the abbey.
