Description
Lantern slide depicting O'Connor's tomb in Roscommon Abbey, Co. Roscommon. Originally titled 'O'Connors Monument. Roscommon Abby.' and lablelled 'R 8'. The abbey itself was originally founded in c. 1253 by Felim O'Connor the King of Connacht as a Dominican Friary. The slide depcits one of the two remaining Lancet windows. The rest of the monument has largely been destroyed. However, the remains of O'Connor's tomb still exist and is located in the North Wall of the remaining chancelet. The tomb is of Felim O'Connor, King of Connacht in the 13th Century. O'Connor was interred in the abbey c. 1265. The slab of the tomb depicts a robed O'Connor with a dog at his feet. Additionally, the panels along the tomb depict carved gallowglass warriors wearing chain-mail coats. Seven of the soldiers are carrying swords and the eighth a gallowglass axe.
