Opis
Lantern slide depicting the chapter house in Mellifont Abbey, Co. Louth. Originally titled 'MELLIFONT' and labelled 'L5 16'. This slide shows the Chapter House of Mellifont Abbey. Such a building would have been used for large meetings or prayers. These ruins are known as Old Mellifont Abbey, and was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. The abbey was founded in 1142 by Saint Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh. The ruin is located near Collon, by the banks of the river Mattock, 6 miles North of Drogheda. The lavabo would have been used by the monks to wash their hands before eating. A new abbey still active, is located nearby.
