Beschrijving
Lantern slide of fortified headland at Inisfitae, Mutton Island, Co. Clare. Originally catalogued with labels `'C3 20', 'T. Mason, 5, Dame Street, Dublin' and 'Inisfitae, Mutton Island, Co. Clare'. Depicted are two ruins at Inisfitae at Mutton Island. Samuel Lewis records that the ruins were an old signal tower and an ancient structure, said to date from the time of St. Senan of Inniscattery. According to the Annals of the Four Masters, the island was once called Fitha Island and it formed part of the mainland until March 16th, 804 when a tidal wave or earthquake caused the land to break away and over 1,000 people drowned. The island is now uninhabited with the last inhabitants leaving in the 1920s; little remains of the village. The exact location on the island of the ruins could not be established.
