Description

Lantern slide of an illustration of Essex Bridge & Statue of George 1st, Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 IV 65' and without a title. This statue was erected on the former Essex Bridge in 1722 and was sculpted by John van Nost the Elder. It was comissioned in order to acknowledge the many favours bestowed on the city of Dublin by King George. The statue was removed after an arch of the bridge began to collapse. It was sold to the Barber Institute in Bermingham in the late 1930's. Essex bridge was built by Sir Humphrey Jervis but was rebuilt in 1872 to become what it is now known as Grattan Bridge.
