Description

Lantern slide of Carton House, Co. Kildare. Originally catalogued with labels "Carton Saloon Ceiling Centre" and "D3XI" and "37." Depicts a close-up view of Carton House's Saloon ceiling, focusing on the centre panel. The panel is part of the ornate plasterwork covering the ceiling, depicting a scence called 'The Courtship of the Gods,' created by the Lafranchini Brothers. An inscription on the bottom of the image reads: 'Carton- Ceiling of Saloon.' Carton House was built in the 17th century by Sir William of the Talbot family of Malahide. During the time that the Saloon was built it was lived in by the First Duke of Leinster and his wife Lady Emily Lennox.
