Description
Lantern slide of St. Mary's Abbey, Abbey Street, Co. Dublin. Originally catalogued with labels "Dublin: Mary's -illegible- Ch. Ho." and "D3XI 100" and "Leask." Depicts an interior view of the Abbey's Chapter House, with vaulted ceiling visible. According to the medieval Irish chronical the Annals of the Four Masters, St. Mary's abbey was founded in 846. Originally a Benedictine order, it became a Cistercian order in 1147. The abbey was dissolved in the early 1500s and fell to ruin, only to rediscovered in the 1880s, buried beneath street level. The Chapter House is the only surviving part of the abbey.
