Title

Athenry Town Wall, Co. Galway, Ireland

Subject

Town Defenses
Tower

Description

Lantern slide of Athenry town wall and south-east tower, Co. Galway. Originally labeled '36 G' with title 'Athenry - Town Wall.' .The first recorded charter related to the town dates to 1310 there are no accurate
records for the building of the Town Walls and it is possible that attacks, such as the 1316 Battle
of Athenry led to the strengthening of the Town Walls/addition of towers. Despite this it is accepted that this tower was built in the second phase of the town's defensive building dating to the 14th century
