Description

Lantern slide of a sculpture of James Ussher, Dublin. Originally labeled 'D3 92' and with title 'TCD LIBRARY.' This marble bust was created by Peter Scheemakers and resides in the Old Library of Trinity College. The person depicted is James Ussher, the Irish Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland between the years 1625 and 1656. Ussher had a reputation as a prolific scholar and his opinion was highly regarded by the King and Parliament. The sculpter, Peter Scheemakers, was comissioned to carve 14 figures for the college's library, and other busts include Francis Bacon, William Shakespheare, Homer, Plato and Aristotle
