ROMAN ANTIQUE, THIS ANCIENT SCULPTURED RELICK OF MINERVA (PATRON OF THE LIBERAL ARTS) AND HER FAVORITE BIRD THE OWL, IS OF VERY RUDE WORKMANSHIP, CUT IN THE SURFACE OF RED ROCK. IT IS SITUATED IN A FIELD ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE RIVER DEE IN THE PARISH OF ST MARY IN THE CITY OF CHESTER. IT IS COMMONL CALLED EDGARS CAVE OWING (AS IS SUPPOSED) TO KING EDGAR BEING ROWE FOM NEAR THIS SPOT, TO THE MONASTERY OF ST JOHN BY EIGHT TRIBUTARY KINGS A.D. 955-7
